Ollie Johnston and Frank thomson, two disney animators gave 12 principles of animation in their book named The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation in the year 1981.

- Follow through and overlapping action: Both the follow through and overlapping help in rendering the movements more realistically. The follow through means that the loose parts of an object or character keep on moving even after the object has stopped moving. For Example, say a dog is running and suddenly stops, but his loose skin below the neck is still moving. Meanwhile, in overlapping, similar parts move in different directions at the same time. Good example of this is a character who is dancing and its hand is moving irrespective of how and where is the same arm is moving.
- Slow in and Slow out: This means to focus on the main point. For example, if a character is doing sit ups, then a bit slower focus is put while the character sits or stands only and rest of the posture has a faster speed and is not focused.
- Arc: All natural actions have an arched trajectory. This means there is a natural path in which objects or people in different speeds move. A slow moving person can take a sharper turn, whereas a fast moving person will take a broader turn. This kind of things are to be followed to make a scene look more lively.
- Secondary action: Despite focusing on main action, a realistic look can’t be achieved. The secondary actions are to be equally considered for near real look and feel. This can be understood as – consider a character walking on a street. A mere movements of legs will make it look fine, but what if hands also move along the foot and the legs. This makes it look real. Here, the movement of legs is primary and movement of arms is secondary.
- Timing: This determines the number of frames per scene according to speed of its actions. Animation movies companies focus on correct timing that makes objects to follow the laws of physics.
- Exaggeration: Exaggeration means putting real like actions or even some supernatural effects to the scene to make it look really happening. This must be done carefully, so that nothing looks over or under rated according to the scenes.
